The History of Houzz by the Numbers
Before telling the story of Houzz, it’s important to reveal the numbers at the heart of the story. The Houzz community consists of 40 million homeowners, home improvement professionals and home design enthusiasts – incredible for what began as a side project. At HalfPrice, we love working with homeowners and making a small contribution to someone’s dream home. Our range of shutters will hopefully feature in some of the millions of images on Houzz Australia!
How can a side project turn in to a bustling community of 40 million people with 25 million unique monthly visitors? 55% of Houzz users are in the United States but other markets are also growing. In the United Kingdom, the app has 2 million users and continues to grow. In Australia, as of August 2015, the app had over 700,000 unique users – only one year after launch. What is behind these incredible numbers?
What Makes Houzz So Popular?
What’s so appealing about Houzz? Well for starters, it currently features over 12 million photos to browse, so it’s vast database helps homeowners gain inspiration for their own homes.Houzz is also home to 3 million home professionals available to hire.
One of the most useful aspects of Houzz is how homeowners can use images from it to communicate with designers how they want their home to look. It can be hard for your average homeowner to articulate this without using pictures and if they find a suitable image on Houzz it makes communicating their intentions to a professional much easier. While homeowners may be able to imagine how they want a room in their home to look, it’s an entirely different story explaining the idea clearly to a professional.
Think of it like this, if a designer asked you if you’d like coffered ceilings you probably wouldn’t know what to say, but if you saw this ceiling in a picture you would know if you wanted it or not – that’s the power of Houzz. For example, when homeowners contact us about our range of plantation shutters we can show them images of all the different types of shutters to help them make a decision, but for an entire room it can be difficult for people to describe clearly how they want everything in it to look.
